In short. Temporary power is an engineered electrical system with a short life, not a machine dropped at the gate. The right rental scope is set by the operating load and its largest starting step, the rental duration, the site interfaces and the method of connection, with cables, distribution, protection, earthing and fuel planned alongside the generator. Reddy Generators arranges rental and temporary power across Hyderabad, Secunderabad and the surrounding districts on that basis.
Why “500 kVA on rent” is not yet a requirement
Most rental enquiries arrive as a single number. The number is a useful start, but a usable temporary supply needs a generator, cables sized for the route, a distribution board with protection, an earth electrode, a fuel arrangement that matches the hours of operation, and a defined way of connecting to the load or transferring from the normal source. When any of these is left to chance, the generator can be perfectly healthy while the installation fails. The questions below convert the headline figure into a scope that can be priced, mobilised and commissioned without surprises.
Start with the load, not the nameplate total
A factory or an event does not experience electricity as one figure. It experiences a sequence: lights and offices first, then pumps, then a compressor that starts direct-on-line, then a chiller that restarts after every interruption. Adding up every nameplate overstates the running load, while ignoring the largest motor start understates the generator needed. Before equipment is selected, establish the operating load in kW and kVA, the maximum demand, the largest single starting load and its starting method, the power factor, the voltage and phase arrangement (415 V three-phase or 230 V single-phase at 50 Hz for almost all Indian sites) and how critical the supply is. Where only a nameplate list exists, the power requirement configurator helps turn it into a demand estimate.
Match the generator to the hardest moment
Generators are sized for the worst transient, not the average. A 160 kVA set may carry a 100 kW steady load comfortably and still trip when a 37 kW compressor starts across the line with the rest of the plant connected. For motor-heavy loads, expect the required rating to be set by starting kVA and acceptable voltage dip rather than by the running load, and treat soft starters, star-delta or staged restarts as part of the rental design.
Define the rental period honestly
Eight hours and eight months are different projects even when the kVA is identical. Duration changes fuel logistics, the service interval that will fall inside the hire, whether an operator is needed, whether a second set is justified and how the contract is structured. A long-duration hire is an operating asset that needs scheduled maintenance windows, consumables and a breakdown pathway written into the agreement before mobilisation.
| Duration | Typical application | What changes in the scope |
|---|---|---|
| Hours to 2 days | Events, short tests, brief outages | Base tank usually sufficient; focus on connection, earthing and operator presence |
| Days to weeks | Planned outages, bridging during repair | Refuelling schedule, transfer method, after-hours call-out arrangement |
| Weeks to months | Construction, shutdowns, capacity bridging | Service intervals inside the hire, external fuel storage, redundancy review, load growth control |
| Months to years | Prime power where grid is absent or delayed | Treated as a temporary power plant: fuel quality, spares, monitoring, planned overhaul |
Site first: where the generator will actually live
A correctly sized set still becomes an unreliable installation when the site interfaces are poorly planned. Before deployment, confirm the generator position and the ground it will stand on, access for the truck or crane, the cable route and its length, exhaust direction and clearance from openings, ventilation around the canopy, fuel delivery access, security, noise sensitivity of neighbours and exposure to rain. Hyderabad sites add two recurring issues: monsoon waterlogging at the generator position, and summer ambient temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius that reduce the set’s continuous output. Both must be allowed for in the position and the rating.
Temporary power pathways
Rental requirements fall into recognisable patterns, and each has its own page because the engineering emphasis differs.
- Generator rental for general commercial, industrial and project loads, from small single-phase sets upward.
- Multi-megawatt rental power where several synchronised modules form a temporary power plant.
- Mobile generator rental for work fronts that move and loads that are spread across a site.
- Load bank rental for controlled testing of generators, UPS systems and switchgear during commissioning.
- Planned-outage power that keeps defined loads supplied while transformers or switchgear are isolated.
- Emergency temporary power, arranged urgently but still subject to safe connection and availability.
Temporary distribution boards, cables, transformers and transfer equipment sit behind all of these and are specified as part of the same scope.
Availability is stated, never assumed
We quote rental capacity in one of three ways. A set is confirmed available only when current fleet records support it. Most enquiries are initially answered as subject to availability while the requirement is reviewed. Larger or unusual requirements, such as synchronised plants, gas sets or battery storage, are treated as project configurations where equipment, engineering review and sometimes partner supply must be confirmed before any commitment is made. This is deliberate; a mobilisation promise that cannot be kept is worse than a day’s delay in confirming it.

Common mistakes
- Renting to the sum of all nameplates. The set runs at a fraction of its rating for the whole hire, wastes fuel and risks wet stacking, while the budget is spent on capacity that is never used.
- Ignoring the largest motor start. The generator carries the steady load but trips or stalls each time the compressor or pump starts, and the hire is blamed on the machine.
- Leaving cable length out of the enquiry. A long run at full current drops voltage beyond what motors tolerate, so a correctly sized generator still delivers an unusable supply.
- Arriving at the site without a fuel plan. A full base tank at mobilisation lasts hours, not weeks, and the first unplanned shutdown happens at the worst moment.
- Treating the connection as somebody else’s problem. Without a defined transfer or isolation method, the generator runs but the load never reaches it, or worse, back-feeds the DISCOM network.
What to send us
Send the application and site address, the running load in kW or kVA or an equipment list, the largest motor or other starting load, the voltage and phase required, the start date and duration, daily operating hours, the distance from the generator position to the connection point, and whether an existing panel, ATS or temporary board will be used. Photographs of the proposed generator position and the incoming panel let us flag access or connection problems early. Start with the generator rental enquiry and we will confirm scope and availability from there.
Questions engineers ask
How quickly can a rental generator be delivered in Hyderabad?
For common ratings within the city, same-day or next-day mobilisation is often possible when the connection point is ready and the requirement is clear. Larger sets, synchronised plants and sites outside the city need transport, lifting and cabling arranged, which adds time. We do not quote a fixed emergency response time unless it is written into an accepted agreement.
Does the rental include cables, distribution board and earthing?
They can be included and usually should be, because the generator alone does not make a safe supply. Tell us the cable route length, the number and size of outgoing circuits and whether an earth electrode exists at the position. We then quote the generator, cables, board and earthing as one scope with one point of responsibility.
Who supplies and pays for diesel during the hire?
Either arrangement is workable, but it must be written down before mobilisation along with who monitors the tank level and who orders the next delivery. For long hires we recommend an external storage tank with a transfer arrangement and a defined reorder level, because running a tank dry draws sludge and water into the fuel system.
Can a rental generator be connected to the existing building panel?
Yes, through a changeover or ATS that prevents the generator and the DISCOM supply from ever being connected together. Connecting directly to a live panel without an interlocked transfer device is unsafe and prohibited. Where the building has no changeover, a temporary rental ATS or manual interlocked changeover is added to the scope.
Are rental generators required to meet CPCB emission norms?
Diesel sets in service must comply with the norms applicable at their date of manufacture, and new sets up to 800 kW placed on the market now must meet CPCB IV+. Some locations, including sensitive zones and sites under local pollution control conditions, impose further restrictions on DG operation. Tell us the location and we will advise which sets are suitable.
