Diesel Generators for Guntur: Sales, Rental and Service for Chilli Cold Storages, Mills, Hospitals and Colleges

In short. Reddy Generators supplies new and used diesel generators, rents sets from its own fleet, and provides service, AMC, overhauls and spares in Guntur, roughly 300 km from Hyderabad by road. Guntur’s demand is dominated by refrigeration and motors — chilli cold storages, spinning mills and agro-processing — running through summers that have touched about 47 °C, so the generator must be sized for motor starting and heat, not just for the running load. This page shows how, with a worked cold-storage example and a load-and-starting worksheet.

Who this page is for: For owners and engineers of chilli cold storages, spinning and agro-processing mills, hospitals, colleges and commercial buildings in Guntur who need a generator sized for refrigeration and motor loads and for some of the hottest summers in Andhra Pradesh.

Key facts

  • Guntur is roughly 300 km from Hyderabad by road, usually via NH 65 and Vijayawada. Supply, rental delivery and service visits are planned from Hyderabad; timing is confirmed when you call.
  • Power distribution is by APCPDCL, the central distribution company headquartered in Vijayawada, which took over Guntur from the southern company in 2020.
  • The Guntur market yard is described as the largest chilli market yard in Asia. The district has a large number of chilli cold storages that hold stock for months between harvests.
  • Summer heat is extreme: about 47 °C was reached during the May 2015 heat wave, and May–June are the hottest months.
  • Guntur is also a tobacco and cotton hub with spinning mills on its outskirts, a large government general hospital and many private hospitals, with AIIMS Mangalagiri and several universities nearby.

Guntur’s conditions and what they decide

Condition Generator consequence Decision
Summer peaks around 45–47 °C Output derates above the data-sheet reference temperature; radiators lose margin; afternoon high-temperature trips exactly when refrigeration load is highest Apply the maker’s derating at your design ambient; give the set a shaded, well-ventilated position with no hot-air recirculation; specify a radiator rated for high ambient.
Refrigeration compressors as the main load Large motors with heavy starting current; voltage dips that trip other contactors; repeated start attempts Size for starting kVA as well as running kW; use star-delta or soft starters; stagger compressor restarts after changeover.
Stored produce worth far more than the generator A long outage in summer raises chamber temperature and risks quality claims Treat the cold store’s set as critical standby: AMF panel, tested monthly on real load, with fuel for the longest outage you are prepared to cover.
Dust from yards, roads and fields in the dry season Air filters clog; radiator fins block with fine dust and chilli residue Shorter air-filter inspection intervals in the dry months; regular radiator cleaning; keep the set away from loading bays.
Rain and flood events affecting the district Outages spread across districts during severe floods, as in September 2024 Keep plinths and panels above local water levels; keep enough diesel on site for several days.
Hospitals and campuses with mixed loads UPS, imaging, lifts, pumps and air conditioning on one set; harmonics and step loads Check UPS compatibility on DG supply and priority of loads; consider two sets for critical buildings.

Guntur sites and typical generator sizes

Ranges below are illustrative. Every site needs its own load list and starting check.

Site Typical set size Duty Key engineering point
Chilli cold storage (single plant room) 160–500 kVA Critical standby; long runs in summer outages Ammonia compressor starting; staggered restart; heat derating
Spinning mill 500 kVA to multi-set plants Standby or prime, depending on grid reliability and economics Many drives and motors; harmonics; humidification plant; load sharing between sets
Agro-processing (grading, drying, grinding, packing) 62.5–320 kVA Standby; seasonal peaks Pulveriser and blower motors; dust
Tobacco and cotton processing and warehousing 62.5–500 kVA Standby; seasonal Fire pumps, conveyors and humidity control
Hospitals and nursing homes 62.5–1,000 kVA, often two sets Critical standby AMF transfer; imaging and oxygen loads; UPS on DG
Colleges and university campuses 125–750 kVA, sometimes several sets per block Standby; exam-season critical Light load in holidays and nights — see light-load running
Commercial buildings and apartments 30–250 kVA Standby Lifts and pumps; acoustic enclosures

Worked example (illustrative): sizing a set for a chilli cold storage

Illustrative case. A Guntur chilli cold storage has two ammonia refrigeration compressors of 75 kW each, started star-delta. Condenser fans and pumps add 15 kW and chamber lighting, hoists and the office add 10 kW. In winter one compressor carries the store; in May both run. The owner wants a standby set that will carry the full summer load.

  1. Summer running load: 75 + 75 + 15 + 10 = 175 kW. At an overall power factor of about 0.85 this is 175 ÷ 0.85 ≈ 206 kVA.
  2. Running kVA of one compressor motor: taking efficiency about 0.92 and power factor about 0.85, 75 ÷ (0.92 × 0.85) ≈ 96 kVA.
  3. Starting kVA of the second compressor: direct-on-line starting would draw about six times running current, roughly 6 × 96 ≈ 575 kVA. Star-delta reduces this to about one third, roughly 190 kVA (192 kVA), at a low power factor.
  4. Load already on the set when the second compressor starts: the first compressor (96 kVA) plus fans, pumps, lighting and office (25 kW ÷ 0.85 ≈ 29 kVA), about 125 kVA.
  5. Starting check: the set must accept a step of about 190 kVA of starting load while already carrying 125 kVA, with a voltage dip the other contactors and controls can tolerate — commonly 15–20 % or less. This is read from the set’s motor-starting data, not guessed. A 250 kVA set would carry the running load but leaves little margin for this step and for summer derating.
  6. Heat derating: consider a 320 kVA set (256 kW at 0.8 power factor). If its data sheet shows, for illustration, about 5 % derating at Guntur’s design summer ambient, the available output is 256 × 0.95 ≈ 243 kW. The summer load of 175 kW is then about 72 % of derated output — a comfortable loading, with headroom for the compressor start.
  7. Restart sequence: after a changeover, the AMF panel or plant controls should bring on fans and pumps first, then compressor 1, then compressor 2 after a delay of a minute or so, never both together. Simultaneous starting would add the two starting steps and could stall the set.

Fuel for a long summer outage: at about 0.27 litres per kWh, 175 kW uses roughly 47 litres an hour, or about 1,130 litres for 24 hours. A cold store that wants to ride through a full day without refuelling needs that much usable diesel on site.

Set check = derated kW ≥ running kW with margin  AND  set accepts (load already on) + (largest starting kVA) within the allowed voltage dip

What the example does not cover

Two further checks complete the sizing. First, if any compressor runs on a variable-frequency drive, its starting step is small but its harmonic current is not; the alternator and AVR must be suitable for non-linear load. Second, defrost heaters and chamber fans add load on a timer, often at night; they must be counted in the worst-case combination, not left out because they are “small”. A load list that records when each item runs is more useful than a list of nameplates alone.

Hospitals and campuses in Guntur

Guntur’s hospitals and educational campuses present a different problem from the cold stores: many loads behind UPS systems, imaging equipment with high momentary demand, lifts, pumps and large air-conditioning plants. Here the questions are transfer time through the AMF panel, how the UPS behaves on generator supply, and whether the set spends most nights and holidays at very light load. Two smaller sets often serve a hospital better than one large one: one can carry the essential load while the other is serviced, and neither runs nearly empty at night. Our guide to UPS problems on generator supply covers the compatibility checks.

Sales, rental, service and spares for Guntur

New generators

New CPCB IV+ sets are supplied through supply tie-ups with all major makes. For cold stores and mills, we compare the motor-starting performance and high-ambient rating of the options, not only the kVA on the quotation. Installation, AMF panels and changeover arrangements are part of the same plan.

Rental

Rental sets from Reddy Generators’ own fleet are delivered by road from Hyderabad. In Guntur, rental is most often used to cover a cold-storage set overhaul before the summer, a mill’s planned shutdown, a hospital DG replacement, or a campus event. Book it well before the hot season, when demand for reliable power is highest.

Service and AMC

AMC and service visits are scheduled in advance from Hyderabad. For Guntur the important pre-summer tasks are radiator cleaning and coolant check, air-filter replacement, a loaded test that includes a compressor start, battery health, and a check of the AMF restart sequence. Overhauls, alternator rewinding, fuel injection work, AVR and controller repairs are carried out on site or in our Hyderabad workshop.

Spares

Filters, belts, batteries, sensors and service parts for all major makes are supplied from Hyderabad. Cold stores that cannot afford a day’s wait should keep one set of filters, a fan belt and control fuses on site.

Used, refurbished and part exchange

Used and refurbished sets from 15 to 2,000 kVA, all major makes, are load-bank tested before sale. Refurbished sets carry a six-month warranty (exclusions apply); used sets sold as-is come with an inspection report. If an older cold-storage set is too small for added chambers, we can take it in part exchange against a larger one.

Safety: ammonia plant rooms have their own safety requirements; the generator, its exhaust and any fuel storage must be positioned to the plant’s safety layout, never inside the compressor room. Changeover and AMF wiring must be done by licensed electricians, with interlocks that make back-feeding into the grid impossible.

Summer readiness for Guntur sets

  • With the set stopped and the starting battery isolated, clean the radiator core against the normal airflow (from the outer face back towards the fan); check for bent fins and blocked passages.
  • Check that hot air from the radiator is not being drawn back into the canopy or room.
  • Replace or inspect the air filter, and check the restriction indicator.
  • Test the set on real load, including one compressor start, and watch coolant temperature for at least 30 minutes.
  • Check the AMF time delays so compressors restart one at a time.
  • Fill the fuel tank and record the level; check for water in the fuel.

More detail is in our summer precautions and overheating troubleshooting guides.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing a cold-storage set from the running kW alone and finding it stalls when the second ammonia compressor starts.
  • Letting all compressors restart together after a changeover instead of staggering them.
  • Using the kVA from the quotation without applying derating for a 45 °C-plus summer afternoon.
  • Cleaning the radiator only after a high-temperature trip in May, instead of before the summer.

What to send us

Send the site address in Guntur, the kW and starting method of each compressor or large motor, the other loads in kW, how many compressors run in summer, details of any existing generator (make, kVA, year, running hours, nameplate photo), photos of where the set stands and of the main panel, the longest outage you want to cover, and whether you need a new or used set, rental, AMC or a repair. Use the Generator sales enquiry, or WhatsApp the details and photographs.

Questions customers in Guntur ask

Do you supply generators in Guntur?

Yes. Reddy Generators supplies new diesel generators of all major makes through supply tie-ups, plus used and refurbished sets, for Guntur city and district. Delivery and installation are planned from Hyderabad and timing is confirmed when you call.

What size generator does a chilli cold storage need?

It depends on the compressors and how they start. A store with two 75 kW star-delta compressors and about 25 kW of other load runs about 175 kW in summer; after allowing for compressor starting and heat derating, a set of around 320 kVA is a typical outcome. Send your nameplate data for a proper check.

Why does our generator trip when the second compressor starts?

Usually because the set cannot accept the starting step on top of the load already running, or both compressors try to start together after a changeover. Staggering the restarts, checking the starter, and confirming the set’s motor-starting capability normally solve it.

Do you give generators on rent in Guntur?

Yes. Rental sets come from our own fleet in Hyderabad, about 300 km away. Rental is planned in advance, typically for overhauls, shutdowns, DG replacements and events.

Do you provide generator AMC and repairs in Guntur?

Yes. We schedule planned service visits from Hyderabad, carry out overhauls, alternator rewinding, AVR and controller repairs, and supply spare parts for all major makes.

How much does heat reduce generator output in Guntur?

Generators are rated at a reference ambient temperature on the data sheet; above it, output reduces according to the maker’s derating table. In Guntur summers this can be several per cent, so size the set using the derated figure.

Can you take our old generator in exchange for a bigger one?

Yes. Reddy Generators buys used sets and takes sets in part exchange against new, used or refurbished generators.
