Generator Sales, Rental and Service in Visakhapatnam (Vizag): Cyclone-Ready Standby Power for a Coastal Industrial City

In short. Reddy Generators supplies new diesel generators, rents sets from its own fleet, and services, overhauls and supplies spares for all major makes in Visakhapatnam, working from its Hyderabad workshop with planned visits to the city. In Vizag the generator decision is shaped less by heat than by salt air, humidity and the certainty that a cyclone will one day take the grid down for days, not hours. This page explains how to choose, protect and run a set for those conditions, with a worked fuel example and a pre-cyclone checklist your site team can use.

Who this page is for: For plant engineers, facility managers and builders in Visakhapatnam — pharma and SEZ units, port and logistics users, hospitals, offices and apartments — who need a generator that will still start and run after a cyclone, in salt-laden coastal air.

Key facts

  • Visakhapatnam is about 620 km from Hyderabad by road, most commonly via Vijayawada and the coastal highway. Generator deliveries, rental mobilisation and service visits are planned in advance; timing is confirmed when you call.
  • Power distribution in the city is by APEPDCL, the eastern distribution company, which is headquartered in Visakhapatnam.
  • Cyclone Hudhud made landfall near the city on 12 October 2014 at very severe strength; the integrated steel plant lost power from 12 to 16 October and the airport was closed for several days. Plan standby power for multi-day outages.
  • Humidity is high for most of the year. Salt and moisture, not extreme heat, are what age generators fastest here.
  • Industrial demand is concentrated in Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City at Parawada, the Duvvada SEZ, the Atchutapuram–Rambilli SEZ belt, Aganampudi, and around the port and steel plant.

What Visakhapatnam’s conditions mean for your generator

The general Hyderabad notes on heat, dust and the monsoon are on our Hyderabad and Secunderabad page. Vizag is a different environment: a coastal city with a busy port, sea breeze carrying chloride inland, high humidity for most of the year, and a recorded history of severe cyclones. The table translates each condition into a decision.

Local condition What it does to a generator Decision for your set
Salt-laden sea air, especially near the beach road, port and harbour areas Corrodes radiator fins and cores, enclosure panels, hinges, fasteners, battery terminals and terminal lugs; salt deposits track across alternator windings and controller boards Specify a coastal-grade enclosure finish and stainless or coated hardware, a radiator with protective coating, and an anti-condensation heater in the alternator. Put salt-deposit cleaning into the service schedule.
High humidity for most of the year Condensation inside the alternator and control panel of sets that stand idle; insulation resistance falls; contacts and relays corrode Keep the alternator heater energised from mains while the set is idle; ask for insulation-resistance readings at every service; use panel heaters where control boards sit in enclosures.
Cyclones bringing multi-day grid outages The set suddenly has to run continuously for days, beyond what a standby rating and a small day tank were chosen for Check the rating class (standby versus prime) against a 72-hour run; plan fuel storage and refuelling access for when roads are blocked; size for the load you will really carry after a cyclone, not the full connected load.
Heavy rain and wind-driven water Water enters through louvres, exhaust outlets and cable entries; flooding of low plinths; wet starting batteries and control wiring Raise plinths above known water levels; fit rain caps and check exhaust outlets face away from the prevailing wind; seal cable glands; use canopies with proper rain-proof louvres.
Wind loading and flying debris Open sets and temporary canopies are damaged; loose sheets block radiator airflow Anchor enclosures and rental sets to their foundations; clear loose material from around the set before the storm; check radiator airflow after the storm before starting.
Underground cabling only in parts of the city Some beach-side localities have moved to underground distribution; most of the wider city and the industrial belts still depend on overhead lines Do not assume your feeder is cyclone-hardened. Ask your electrical consultant which feeder supplies you and plan standby accordingly.

Who uses generators in Visakhapatnam, and how

Typical set sizes below are illustrative ranges seen across these types of site, not a substitute for a proper load study. Every site should be sized from its own measured or estimated demand.

Site type Where you find it in Vizag Typical set sizes Duty and special points
Pharma API and formulation units Parawada (JN Pharma City), Atchutapuram–Rambilli SEZ belt, Nakkapalli 250 kVA to multi-set plants above 1,000 kVA Standby for HVAC of clean areas, chilled water, process cooling, nitrogen and compressed air. Batch losses make starting reliability and load-step capability critical.
SEZ manufacturing and export units Duvvada SEZ, Atchutapuram SEZ, Aganampudi 125–750 kVA Standby; often a mix of motor loads and UPS-backed IT. Check UPS compatibility on DG supply.
Steel-plant ancillaries and fabrication shops Around the steel plant, Gajuwaka and the industrial suburbs 62.5–500 kVA Welding, cranes and machine tools: heavy step loads, harmonics from rectifiers and drives.
Port users, warehouses and cold chains Port area, container freight stations, logistics parks 62.5–320 kVA Reefer points and cold rooms need power through outages; salt exposure is at its worst here.
Hospitals and diagnostic centres Across the city 125–1,000 kVA, often two sets Critical standby; fast transfer through AMF panels; long runs after cyclones; oxygen plants and imaging load steps.
IT and office buildings City offices and IT clusters 62.5–500 kVA Standby behind UPS; acoustic sets; light load at night.
Apartments and gated communities Beach Road, Madhurawada and the expanding suburbs 30–320 kVA Lifts, pumps, common lighting; acoustic enclosures; light-load running at night.

The cyclone question: how long must your set run?

For most Hyderabad sites, a standby generator runs for a few hours at a time. In Vizag, the plan must cover the day the grid does not come back. After a severe cyclone, distribution lines, poles and substations need repair across a wide area, and restoration is done in stages. Plan on at least 72 hours of independent running for any site that cannot stop: a hospital, a pharma plant in mid-batch, cold storage, a water pumping station, or a building with residents on upper floors.

Three things change when the run is measured in days:

  • Rating class. A set bought with a standby rating is intended for limited hours at variable load during grid failures. Days of continuous running at high load fit a prime rating better. If your existing set is standby-rated, reduce the load it must carry after a cyclone to a level within its prime capability — your service engineer can read this from the data sheet.
  • Fuel. The day tank of a typical set lasts hours, not days. Bulk storage, a safe refuelling route and diesel bought before landfall decide whether the set keeps running.
  • Load discipline. Decide in advance which loads stay on. Shedding non-essential air conditioning and lighting can double the hours from the same fuel.

Worked example (illustrative): fuel for a 72-hour run at a pharma unit

Illustrative case. A formulation unit in the Parawada area has a 320 kVA standby set (256 kW at 0.8 power factor). Its critical load after a cyclone — clean-room air handling, chilled water, process cooling, nitrogen generation, essential lighting and IT — has been listed at 180 kW. Everything else is shed.

  1. Size check: 180 kW ÷ 0.8 = 225 kVA. On the 320 kVA set this is 180 ÷ 256 ≈ 70 % load — a healthy loading for continuous running, and within the range most makers accept for extended prime-type operation. The service engineer must still confirm this against the set’s prime rating.
  2. Fuel rate: using an illustrative specific fuel consumption of about 0.27 litres per kWh at this load, the set burns 180 × 0.27 ≈ 48.6 litres per hour.
  3. 72-hour requirement: 48.6 × 72 ≈ 3,500 litres (3,499 L).
  4. Day tank endurance: if the base tank holds about 990 litres with roughly 891 litres usable, it lasts 891 ÷ 48.6 ≈ 18 hours. Without bulk storage, the site needs about three full refuellings in three days — during a period when tankers may not be able to reach it.
  5. Decision: keep about 2,600 litres of bulk diesel in addition to a full day tank (subject to the statutory limits and approvals for your premises), fill it at the pre-cyclone watch stage, about 72 hours before landfall, and arrange a hand-transfer or pump arrangement from bulk tank to day tank that site staff can operate safely.

If the same unit had not shed load and tried to run 240 kW, consumption would rise to roughly 65 litres per hour and the 72-hour requirement to about 4,700 litres — and the set would be running at or above its likely prime rating (typically about 90 % of the 256 kW standby figure). Load discipline is the cheapest fuel tank there is.

Safety: store and transfer diesel only in approved containers and arrangements, away from the exhaust and hot surfaces, with fire extinguishers at hand. Connections between generator and building wiring, and any temporary changeover, must be made by competent, licensed electricians through a proper changeover or AMF panel. Never back-feed a building through a socket or a distribution board — it endangers the line crews restoring the grid after a storm.

How sales, rental, service and spares work for Visakhapatnam

New sets

Reddy Generators supplies new CPCB IV+ diesel generators through supply tie-ups with all major makes. For Vizag we ask at the enquiry stage how close the site is to the sea and whether the set sits indoors or outside, so that the enclosure finish, radiator protection and alternator heater can be specified up front rather than retrofitted. Installation, AMF panels and changeover arrangements are planned as part of the same job.

Rental

Rental sets come from Reddy Generators’ own fleet and travel by road from Hyderabad. Rental works best in Vizag when it is planned: for a DG overhaul, a plant shutdown, a construction phase, or a pre-booked cyclone-season standby. Last-minute rental after a cyclone is difficult for any supplier because roads, fuel and transport are all under pressure at the same time. Share your site details early; delivery timing is confirmed when you call.

Service, AMC and overhauls

Service visits from Hyderabad are scheduled in advance. A Vizag AMC should include, beyond the normal oil, filter and battery work: salt-deposit cleaning of the radiator and alternator, insulation-resistance tests, inspection of enclosure corrosion and fixings, a check that the alternator heater works, and a loaded test run before the north-east monsoon and cyclone season (October to December is the classic risk period on this coast). Reddy Generators also carries out top and major overhauls, alternator rewinding, AVR and controller repairs.

Spares

Filters, belts, batteries and common service parts for all major makes are supplied from Hyderabad. For a site that must run for days after a storm, keep a small critical-spares kit on site; it is listed in the checklist below.

Used and refurbished sets

Used and refurbished sets from 15 to 2,000 kVA, all major makes, are an option for a second standby set or a cyclone-season backup. Every set is load-bank tested before sale; refurbished sets carry a six-month warranty (exclusions apply), and used sets sold as-is come with an inspection report. Reddy Generators also buys used sets and takes existing sets in part exchange.

Pre-cyclone generator readiness checklist

Print this and hand it to the person responsible for the generator. Start it as soon as a pre-cyclone watch is issued for the north Andhra coast.

When the pre-cyclone watch is issued (about 72 hours before)

  • Fill the day tank and the bulk tank; record the litres in the log book.
  • Run the set on real load for at least 30 minutes — not at no load. Note oil pressure, coolant temperature, voltage and frequency.
  • Check the starting battery: electrolyte or state-of-charge indicator, terminals clean and tight, charger working.
  • Check the coolant level and radiator fins for salt crust and blockage.
  • Confirm the AMF panel is in Auto and the generator breaker is healthy.
  • Agree the load-shedding list: which feeders stay on, which go off, who switches them.

The day before landfall

  • Clear loose sheets, cartons and debris from around the set and its air path.
  • Check enclosure doors lock and the exhaust rain cap is in place.
  • Seal or cover cable entries that face the weather; check plinth drainage.
  • Place the critical-spares kit on site: fuel and oil filters, one fan belt, fuses for the control panel, battery jump leads, a few litres of engine oil and coolant.
  • Save the generator’s make, model, engine and alternator serial numbers on a phone, with the Reddy Generators number 98852 01608.

After the storm, before restarting manually

  • Walk round the set: water inside the enclosure, damaged louvres, debris on the radiator, fuel or oil leaks.
  • If water has entered the alternator or control panel, do not run it — call for an insulation test first.
  • Check the air filter restriction indicator; wet or clogged filters starve the engine.
  • When the grid returns, allow the AMF panel to transfer back and the set to cool down before shutting down.

Where confirmed experience applies

Reddy Generators has maintained DG sets, AVRs and fire-fighting engines at nearly 50 TS TRANSCO substations since 2018 — the same discipline of logged, scheduled maintenance on standby sets that rarely run but must start first time is what a Vizag AMC needs. The company has also done project-based service work outside its home states, in Odisha and Assam, which is how longer-distance planned visits are organised.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a standard enclosure for a set that will stand within sight of the sea, then replacing corroded panels and radiators within a few years.
  • Switching off the alternator heater to save power, so idle windings absorb moisture and fail an insulation test when the cyclone arrives.
  • Planning standby for a few hours when a severe cyclone can keep the grid off for days, and running out of diesel on the second night.
  • Testing the set at no load before the season and assuming it will carry the full critical load when it matters.

What to send us

Tell us where in Visakhapatnam the site is and roughly how far it is from the sea, whether the set is indoors or outside, the make, model and kVA of any existing generator with a photo of its nameplate, the loads that must stay on during a long outage, your current fuel storage, and whether you need a new set, a rental, an AMC or a repair. Photos of the generator, its enclosure and the panel help us plan the visit. Use the Service and AMC enquiry, or WhatsApp the details and photographs.

Questions customers in Visakhapatnam ask

Do you supply generators in Visakhapatnam?

Yes. Reddy Generators supplies new diesel generators of all major makes through supply tie-ups, as well as used and refurbished sets, for sites in Visakhapatnam and the surrounding district. We plan delivery, installation, AMF panels and changeover from Hyderabad; timing is confirmed when you call.

Can I rent a generator in Vizag?

Yes. Rental sets come from our own fleet in Hyderabad, about 620 km away by road. Rental is easiest to arrange when it is planned in advance, for example for a DG overhaul, a shutdown, a construction phase or cyclone-season standby.

Do you provide generator AMC in Visakhapatnam?

Yes. We schedule planned service visits from Hyderabad. For coastal sites the AMC adds salt cleaning of the radiator and alternator, insulation-resistance tests, corrosion inspection and a loaded test run before the cyclone season.

How do I protect a generator from salt air in Vizag?

Specify a coastal-grade enclosure finish and stainless or coated fasteners, protect the radiator, keep the alternator anti-condensation heater powered while the set is idle, and have salt deposits cleaned at every service. Sets close to the beach or port need this most.

How much diesel should we keep for a cyclone?

Work it out from the load you will actually carry. For example, 180 kW at about 0.27 litres per kWh uses roughly 49 litres an hour, or about 3,500 litres for 72 hours. Keep storage within statutory limits and fill it at the pre-cyclone watch stage, about 72 hours before landfall.

Can a standby-rated generator run for three days after a cyclone?

Only if its load is kept within what the set can carry continuously. Standby ratings are meant for limited hours. Shed non-essential loads so the set runs within its prime capability, and check this with your service engineer before the season.

Do you sell used generators in Visakhapatnam?

Yes, we supply used and refurbished sets from 15 to 2,000 kVA. Every set is load-bank tested; refurbished sets carry a six-month warranty with the stated exclusions, and used as-is sets come with an inspection report.
