In short. A good generator sales enquiry tells us what must stay powered, how the set will be used and where it will stand. Send the running load or a load list, the largest motor and how it starts, voltage and phase, standby or prime duty, required backup hours, changeover arrangement, site photographs and the date you need power. With that, Reddy Generators can propose a rating and scope in one conversation instead of several.

Why the enquiry decides the outcome
Most mis-sized generators trace back to an enquiry that gave only a kVA number. A figure copied from an old set or a brochure says nothing about motor starting, UPS loads, ambient temperature or future expansion, and any quotation built on it inherits the error. An enquiry that describes the application lets the proposal start from the load and work towards the equipment, which is the order the engineering requires. If you do not know the final capacity, say so and send the facts you have; a load assessment can begin from a list of equipment and its nameplates.
Information that shapes the proposal
| Information | Why it matters | If you do not have it |
|---|---|---|
| Application and site location | Duty, ambient, access and local rules | Always needed |
| Running load or load list | Base for kW and kVA | Send equipment list or DISCOM maximum demand |
| Largest motor and starting method | Often sets the rating more than running load | Send motor nameplate photograph |
| Voltage and phase | 415 V three-phase or 230 V single-phase | Photograph of the main incomer |
| Standby or prime duty | Decides the rating basis and engine choice | Describe hours of use per year |
| Backup hours and fuel | Tank size and refuelling plan | State longest outage you must ride through |
| Changeover | Manual changeover, AMF panel or ATS | Photograph of existing panel |
| Required date | Stock, lead time, installation programme | Give an approximate month |
From load to kVA
The first calculation converts the running load into apparent power.
kVA = kW / PF
kW is the simultaneous running load, PF is its power factor and kVA is the rating the alternator must supply. Worked example (illustrative): an office building runs 90 kW of lighting, lifts, pumps and air conditioning at a power factor of 0.85, which is about 106 kVA. Allowing roughly 20 percent headroom gives about 127 kVA, so a 125 kVA set is marginal and 160 kVA is the safer candidate. The next check is the lift and pump starting current, and whether the UPS load introduces harmonics. Sizing is explained fully in generator sizing, and the product ranges are listed under generator systems.
Duty, compliance and installation
Tell us how often the set will run. A building with a reliable DISCOM supply may run its set a few hours a month in standby duty. A factory in an area with long outages, or a site with no grid, runs it as prime power, which needs a different rating basis and attention to fuel cost per kWh. New sets up to 800 kW must meet CPCB IV+ emission norms and come in an acoustic enclosure meeting noise limits; electronic engines bring different service needs. Installation scope also needs defining early: foundation, ventilation and exhaust for indoor sets, cable size and route to the main panel, earthing pits, the AMF or ATS panel and approval by the electrical inspectorate where applicable. These are covered under generator installation.
Documents and photographs that help
- Main LT panel and incomer, with nameplates visible.
- The proposed location of the set, with the route to the panel.
- Nameplates of large motors, compressors, chillers and the UPS.
- The existing generator nameplate, if replacing a set.
- Single-line diagram and load schedule, if available.
- Any consultant specification or tender clause the set must meet.
Remove confidential details you do not want shared, and tell us if you would prefer to send drawings through a specific channel.
What happens after you send it
We review the information, ask for anything missing that would change the rating, and then propose a set with its rating basis, emission stage, enclosure, controller and the installation scope. Where the load is complex, such as large motors, VFDs or paralleled sets, we recommend a site visit or load study before final selection. An enquiry does not by itself confirm equipment, availability or price; those are stated in a written quotation. If you need power before a new set can be delivered and installed, see rental and temporary power.
Common mistakes
- Sending only a kVA figure; the quotation inherits whatever error was in that number.
- Omitting the largest motor; the set runs the steady load but trips when the borewell pump starts.
- Asking for standby rating for a set that will run daily; the engine is overworked and wears early.
- Leaving installation scope undefined; cables, earthing and the changeover panel appear as extras after the order.
What to send us
Send the application and location, the load list or running load, the largest motor nameplate photograph, voltage and phase, standby or prime duty, required backup hours, changeover arrangement, site photographs and the date you need the set. Phone or WhatsApp 098852 01608, email info@reddygenerators.com, or contact Reddy Generators through the form with your documents.
Questions engineers ask
Can you size the generator if I do not know my load?
Yes. Send a list of equipment with nameplate photographs or your DISCOM maximum demand reading, and we will estimate running and starting load. For complex sites a measured load study is better.
Do you supply CPCB IV+ compliant generators?
Yes, new sets up to 800 kW are supplied to CPCB IV+. We will explain the service and fuel quality requirements of the engine offered.
Is installation included in the generator price?
Only if the quotation says so. Ask for installation, cabling, earthing, changeover panel and commissioning to be listed separately so offers can be compared.
Should I choose an AMF panel or a manual changeover?
If the load must return automatically without an operator, use an AMF panel with an ATS or contactor changeover. Manual changeover suits sites with staff present and loads that tolerate a longer break.
How long does delivery take?
It depends on rating, make and current stock. Smaller ratings are often available quickly; larger sets and special configurations can take longer. The quotation states the lead time.
We also sell inspected, load-tested used and refurbished generators with panel, installation and AMC.
