Utility + DG + UPS + BESS Architecture

Architecture combining utility, generator, UPS and battery energy storage: roles, control priorities, sizing, charge and discharge strategy, protection, harmonics and failure modes.

In short. Adding battery energy storage to utility, generator and UPS can reduce generator run hours, support peak demand and extend ride-through. It adds complexity: control priorities, protection, charging limits and fault behaviour must be designed together.

Roles

SourceRole
UtilityPrimary supply
UPSNo-break protection for critical loads
BESSLonger ride-through, peak support, generator assist
GeneratorLong-duration backup

Possible value

Design questions

  1. Which source has priority at each moment?
  2. How does BESS charge: from utility, generator or both?
  3. What limits protect the generator from charging load?
  4. How do protection settings handle converter fault contribution? See system studies.
  5. What harmonics do converters add or reduce?
  6. What is the safe shutdown and fire strategy for the battery?

Control

A supervisory controller coordinates sources. See ATS and AMF logic and UPS and DG integration.

Failure modes

Fault levels and protection need a study. See fault level.

Illustrative example

A campus uses BESS to ride through short mains dips and to take the first minutes of load, so the generator only starts for long outages. Charging from the generator is limited so it never exceeds a share of generator capacity.

Charging and generator loading

If the BESS charges from the generator, charging power adds to the load. Limit it so the generator keeps margin for the critical load, and avoid operating the generator at very light load, where engines run less well. Controls should prioritise the critical load always.

Protection design

Study these with the protection and system studies. See system studies.

Battery safety

  1. Site the battery away from critical rooms where possible.
  2. Provide detection, ventilation and fire protection as the chemistry requires.
  3. Plan emergency shutdown and clear signage.
  4. Train responders.

Commissioning

Test each mode in order, including fault scenarios, such as loss of the supervisory controller, loss of the battery converter and generator failure to start. Record the behaviour in each. Review every year or after a configuration change.

The master engineering question

When every source and converter acts at once, does the system still behave predictably and safely?

Questions engineers ask

Does BESS replace a generator?

For long outages, usually not.

Does BESS replace a UPS?

It depends on design; a UPS provides defined ride-through for critical loads.

Is a study needed?

Yes, for protection and control.

What about fire safety?

Plan siting and protection per codes.

Values are illustrative. Design needs system studies.
