80 kVA generator rental for an international offshore pipeline contractor at Kakinada

An 80 kVA diesel generator hired from August 2009 for an international offshore pipeline contractor at Kakinada, extended from three to about five months.

In short. In August 2009 an international offshore pipeline contractor, based in Switzerland, hired an 80 kVA diesel generator from Reddy Generators for its project at Kakinada on the Andhra Pradesh coast. The hire was ordered for about three months and, in November 2009, extended by two more, giving roughly five months of continuous supply under the contractor’s own international purchasing terms.

The requirement

Offshore pipeline projects run an onshore base for logistics, offices, stores and workshops. The contractor needed dependable power there for the duration of the campaign, supplied to its own specification and documentation standards, which are typically stricter than a local hire.

An extended hire

The original order covered about three months. As the project ran on, the client revised the order in November 2009 to add two more months. An extension like this is common on marine projects, where weather and vessel schedules move the end date, and it is one reason long-duration rental needs servicing and breakdown cover agreed from the start.

Outcome and limits

The set was supplied from August 2009 and the hire extended once, for about five months in total. This record is based on the client’s purchase order and its revision; operating logs are not published.

Questions engineers ask about this project

How long can a generator be hired?

As long as the project needs. Here an initial three-month hire was extended by two months; hires of months or years need maintenance, fuel and breakdown cover written into the agreement.

What does an extended rental need that a short one does not?

Scheduled servicing inside the hire period, a plan for consumables and spares, and an agreed response to breakdowns, because the set becomes an operating asset rather than a short-term stopgap.
