In short. A 250 kVA diesel generator delivers 200 kW at 0.8 power factor — about 348 A per phase at 415 V — and is the workhorse rating for mid-size factories, commercial buildings, hospitals’ non-critical blocks, cold storages and construction sites. Used and refurbished 250s are always moving through our Pedda Amberpet workshop; every set is run on the load bank before it is offered, and you get the test record with the machine. Who buys a 250, and for what
This is the first rating where serious industry begins: machine shops with several motors, plastic and packaging units, mid-rise commercial buildings, hotels, and process plants that need real starting capability. A 250 kVA set with 0.22 p.u. transient reactance can accept roughly a 200 kVA load step within a 15 percent voltage dip — in motor terms, about a 25 kW motor started direct-on-line by the conservative screening our calculator uses, or motors of 60 kW and above through a star-delta or soft starter. If your load is motor-heavy, size it properly with the motor-starting calculator rather than by habit.
What to know about the used 250 market
Supply is good — every major maker builds the frame, and sets come off completed projects, upgraded buildings and bank/NBFC refurbishments. Quality is more varied than in smaller frames, because some 250s have lived hard prime-duty lives on construction power. The hour meter alone will not tell you which life a set has led; the load test will. That is why we test before we offer, and why a set that fails our inspection is either rebuilt into refurbished stock or rejected — it is not quietly sold as-is.
As-is or refurbished at this size
At 250 kVA the refurbishment question has real money on both sides. Our rule of thumb from the service floor: for emergency standby behind a reliable grid, a tested as-is set with its inspection report serves well; for daily load-shedding duty or prime power, take the refurbished machine — the rebuild plus the six-month warranty (exclusions: rubber and plastic parts, consumables, fuel-quality damage, overloading) costs less than one unplanned crankshaft event. Definitions and process are on the used and refurbished generators page; valuation logic is on used generator prices.
The installation scope matters at this size
A 250 is past the plug-and-play stage: it wants a proper foundation, an exhaust run with the CPCB stack height, sized cables (around 350–400 A ampacity after derating — check the cable calculator), earthing, and an AMF panel with a changeover that matches your incomer. We quote the set and the complete installation together, and our engineers service what we install — the same model that has kept nearly 50 TS TRANSCO substations running since 2018.

Questions buyers ask about used 250 kVA sets
What does a used 250 kVA generator cost?
Make, hours, condition on load test and emission stage set the figure — how sets are valued explains it. WhatsApp 098852 01608 brings this week’s stock, test records and prices.
How many amps and kW is 250 kVA?
200 kW at 0.8 PF and about 348 A per phase at 415 V. Full table on the full-load current chart.
What size motor can a 250 kVA set start?
About 25 kW direct-on-line within a 15 percent dip by conservative screening, and 60 kW or more with star-delta or a soft starter — verify your case in the calculator.
How do I avoid buying an ex-construction set with a hard life?
Insist on a load test and an inspection report, and read smoke, oil pressure and stability rather than paint and hours. Every set we offer comes with both documents.
Do you install and service the set after sale?
Yes — panel, changeover, cabling, earthing and commissioning, then service and AMC from our own engineers across Telangana, AP and the districts around Hyderabad.
