In short. In December 2007 a global oilfield services company appointed Reddy Generators to supply the temporary utilities for a project site: a fleet of diesel generators from 1.5 kVA to 200 kVA, cable junction boxes and distribution boards, six high-pressure diesel air compressors of 750 to 1,100 cfm at 12 bar, and an operating crew of one technician and three operators, with erection, commissioning and transport included. Everything in the order was supplied, and the package ran for about two and a half years.
| Client | A global oilfield services company (name withheld) |
|---|---|
| Order | December 2007; equipment due on site 18 December 2007 |
| Duration | About two and a half years |
| Scope | Rental supply, erection, commissioning, transport, operation and maintenance |
| Generators | 2 × 200 kVA three-phase, 2 × 75 kVA three-phase, 2 × 15 kVA single-phase, 1 × 1.5 kVA single-phase |
| Distribution | 2 sets of cable junction boxes and distribution boards |
| Compressed air | 3 × 1,100 cfm, 2 × 1,000 cfm and 1 × 750 cfm diesel compressors at 12 bar |
| Crew | 1 technician and 3 operators on site |
The requirement
Oilfield and offshore projects need temporary utilities long before permanent supply exists: power for workshops, offices, lighting, tools and testing, and large volumes of high-pressure compressed air for blasting, pneumatic tools and equipment testing. The client wanted a single contractor to deliver, install, run and maintain all of it, so that its own teams could concentrate on the project.
Why a mixed fleet, not one big generator
A single large generator would have run most of the time at light load, burning fuel inefficiently and putting every load on one machine. The order instead matched set sizes to the loads: two 200 kVA sets for the main loads, two 75 kVA sets for secondary areas, 15 kVA single-phase sets for small loads and offices, and a 1.5 kVA set for the smallest point loads. Each engine runs nearer its efficient range, and a fault on one set affects only its own area.
| Equipment | Quantity | Typical role on a project site |
|---|---|---|
| 200 kVA, three-phase | 2 | Main workshop and process loads |
| 75 kVA, three-phase | 2 | Secondary areas and backup capacity |
| 15 kVA, single-phase | 2 | Offices, cabins and small loads |
| 1.5 kVA, single-phase | 1 | Isolated point loads |
| 1,100 / 1,000 / 750 cfm at 12 bar | 3 / 2 / 1 | Blasting, pneumatic tools and testing |
Work performed
- Transport of all generators and compressors to site
- Erection and commissioning, including cable junction boxes and distribution boards
- On-site operation by one technician and three operators
- Routine servicing and breakdown attendance throughout the hire
Outcome and limits
The full package was supplied and kept in service for about two and a half years, a long-duration hire in which maintenance, fuel and operator cover mattered as much as the equipment itself. This record is based on the client’s purchase order and our own account of the contract; detailed performance logs are not published.
Questions engineers ask about this project
Can one contractor supply both generators and compressors for a project?
Yes, and it simplifies the site: one point of contact for all temporary utilities, one maintenance team, coordinated fuel and spares, and a single party accountable for uptime.
Why use several generator sizes instead of one large set?
Loads differ in size, location and hours. Matching sets from 1.5 kVA to 200 kVA to each load keeps every engine at a healthy loading, saves fuel, and means one breakdown never darkens the whole site.
What does an operated rental include?
Here it included a technician and three operators on site, so the equipment was started, monitored, refuelled and serviced by people who knew it, rather than by the client’s own staff.
