A 200 kVA diesel generator supplied and commissioned on rental within seven days for BHEL at Rayalaseema Thermal Power Project Unit-6, Kadapa, in 2015.

In short. In March 2015 Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), Power Sector Southern Region, placed a work order with Reddy Generators to supply and commission a 200 kVA diesel generator on rental at Unit-6 of the Rayalaseema Thermal Power Project in Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh. The set had to be on site and commissioned within seven days, for a one-month hire.

The requirement

During erection and commissioning of a new thermal unit, the unit’s own auxiliary supply is not yet available, but erection teams need power for tools, lighting, welding and testing. BHEL, as the main equipment contractor for the unit, needed a 200 kVA set on site at short notice and on flexible terms that could follow the construction programme.

Fast mobilisation on government terms

The work order allowed seven days from receipt for the set to reach this remote site, be commissioned and be handed over in good condition, at prices held firm for the order. That combination, quick delivery to a power-plant site under a public-sector work order, is routine for Reddy Generators, which has supplied and maintained generators for state power utilities in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Outcome and limits

The 200 kVA set was supplied, commissioned and run at RTPP Unit-6 for the one-month hire. Short, fast-turnaround hires like this are a large part of construction-site rental work. This record is based on BHEL’s work order; operating logs are not published.

Questions engineers ask about this project

How quickly can a rental generator be mobilised to a power plant site?

On this order the 200 kVA set had to reach site and be commissioned within seven days of the work order. Lead time depends on set size, distance and site access, so confirm it at enquiry.

Why do power plant construction sites hire generators?

Until a unit’s own auxiliary supply is energised, erection and commissioning teams need temporary power for tools, lighting, welding and testing. A rental set bridges that gap and is removed once permanent supply is available.

Can a generator be hired for just one month?

Yes. This hire was for one month. Short hires suit commissioning windows and construction stages; terms usually allow extension if the site needs more time.
