In short. A generator technical library is only useful if the document you open matches the question you are asking and the machine you are standing next to. Datasheets answer selection questions, manuals answer operating and service questions, wiring diagrams answer fault-finding questions and standards tell you what the result must meet. Identify the equipment and the decision first, then pick the document type, then check issuer, revision and applicability before relying on it.
What the library is for
Most generator problems that reach our workshop at Pedda Amberpet are not caused by a lack of information. They are caused by the wrong information: a datasheet for a different alternator frame, a manual for an earlier controller firmware, or a wiring diagram from the factory that no longer matches a panel modified on site. The library groups the documents an engineer, facility manager or purchaser needs into types, explains what each type can and cannot answer, and sets out the checks to make before a document is used for a decision that costs money or affects safety.
The library covers diesel generating sets of all common makes seen in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, including Cummins, Kirloskar, Mahindra, Perkins, CAT, FG Wilson, Greaves, Eicher, Honda and TMTL, together with AMF and ATS panels, synchronising systems, fuel systems, earthing and the Indian standards that govern them. It is organised for the way work actually happens, from a first sizing question through installation, commissioning, routine service and eventual overhaul.
Five document types and the question each answers
| Document type | Answers | Typical use | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datasheet or brochure | What is this machine rated for, and in which duty? | Sizing, tender comparison, derating checks | Datasheets and brochures |
| Manual | How is it installed, operated and serviced? | Commissioning, preventive maintenance, operator training | Generator manuals |
| Wiring diagram | How is it connected and controlled? | Fault-finding, panel modification, ATS and AMF integration | Wiring diagrams |
| GA, BIM and CAD | How big is it and where will it fit? | Room layout, foundation, ventilation and exhaust coordination | GA, BIM and CAD resources |
| Standard or regulation | What must the result comply with? | Rating definitions, emissions, electrical safety, fire | ISO 8528 and the India emission norms |
The types overlap at the edges. An installation manual carries room ventilation figures that also appear on a datasheet, and a controller manual carries terminal diagrams that also appear on the panel drawing. When two documents disagree, the one issued for the exact model and revision wins, and the disagreement itself should be recorded.
Start from the decision, not from the file
Before opening anything, write down the equipment identity and the decision. The identity is the set make and model, the engine model and serial number, the alternator frame and serial number, the controller type and firmware where visible, and the panel builder for any AMF, ATS or synchronising panel. The decision is the question that the document has to settle, for example whether a 250 kVA set can accept a 75 kW compressor motor starting direct on line, or which oil grade the engine needs at 45 degrees ambient.
With those two things written down, the right document type becomes obvious and the wrong ones are easy to reject. A sizing question goes to the datasheet and to the generator sizing guide, not to the operator manual. A fault where the set starts in manual but not in auto goes to the AMF wiring diagram and the controller manual, not to the brochure.
Three separate checks: authentic, current, applicable
Engineers often treat these as one check. They are three, and a document can pass two and fail the third.
Authentic
The document was issued by the manufacturer, panel builder or standards body it claims to come from. Look for the issuer, the document number, the issue date and the revision inside the file, not only in the file name. A scanned brochure that has been passed around on messaging groups for years may be genuine but may carry no revision at all, which limits what it can prove.
Current
The revision is the latest one for that model, or at least the one that applied when the machine was built. Controller manuals change with firmware, emission-related documents changed substantially when CPCB IV+ norms came into force, and engine service bulletins can supersede a procedure in an older manual without the manual itself being reissued.
Applicable
The document describes the installed configuration. A genuine, current manual for a 125 kVA set with a particular controller still does not apply to the same set if the controller was swapped during a repair. Market variants matter too: a 60 Hz export datasheet carries different ratings from the 50 Hz Indian version of the same engine and alternator.
Keep the document identity and the equipment identity together in the plant record so that whoever opens the file five years later understands why it was chosen. The document and evidence status guide explains the labels we use to show how far a document has been checked.
Standards and regulations that matter in India
- ISO 8528 defines the standby, prime and continuous rating classes and the performance classes that decide how much voltage and frequency dip is acceptable on load steps.
- CPCB emission norms, currently CPCB IV+ for new diesel gensets up to 800 kW, decide what can be sold and installed, and state pollution control boards apply them.
- CEA regulations and IS and IEC standards govern the electrical installation, protection, earthing and safety clearances around the set and its panels.
- Local fire and building requirements govern fuel storage quantities, room construction and exhaust routing.
Standards are licensed documents. The library points to the governing reference and explains what it requires in practice, but the current controlling text must be obtained from the standards body or the regulator for a compliance decision.
Common mistakes
- Using the brochure rating to size a standby set without reading the datasheet duty definitions, which leads to a machine that is overloaded under prime duty or oversized for standby.
- Fault-finding from the factory wiring diagram after the panel has been modified on site, which sends the technician to terminals that no longer carry the signal shown.
- Treating a manual for a related model as good enough, which produces wrong torque values, wrong service intervals or wrong controller settings.
- Filing a document without its revision and equipment match, which makes it impossible to tell later whether it still applies.
- Reading a summary of a standard as if it were the standard, which misses the clauses that decide compliance for the specific installation.
What to send us
To get the right document first time, send a clear photograph of the set nameplate and the engine and alternator plates, a photograph of the controller showing its model, and the panel builder’s label for any AMF or ATS panel. Tell us the document type you need, the decision it has to support, and the revision of any document you already hold. If the request concerns a part or a repair, include the fault description and hours run. Contact us with the equipment details and we will confirm what can be supplied and from where.
Questions engineers ask
Can I rely on a manual downloaded from a general file-sharing site?
Only after checking issuer, revision and applicability inside the document. Many shared files are genuine but outdated, or belong to a different market variant. Match the document number and revision to the manufacturer’s current list before using it for service or settings.
Which document do I need to size a generator for my plant?
You need the manufacturer datasheet for the candidate set, which gives standby and prime ratings, alternator reactances and load acceptance data, together with your own load list and motor starting details. The brochure alone is not enough because it rarely states the duty definitions or the transient performance.
Why does the wiring diagram not match my panel?
Either the diagram is for a different panel revision, or the panel was modified after commissioning without the drawing being updated. Record what is actually wired, mark up the drawing, and treat the marked-up copy as the working document until a formal as-built is issued.
Do you supply copies of IS or ISO standards?
No. Standards are licensed and must be bought from BIS, ISO or an authorised reseller. We explain which clauses apply to a generator installation and how they are usually met, and we reference the standard number so you can obtain the current text.
What if the engine, alternator and controller are from three different manufacturers?
That is normal for packaged sets. Keep a separate manual for each subsystem and the set builder’s installation manual for the package. Faults are diagnosed at the interface between them, so the wiring diagram that shows how the three are connected is the most important document to secure.
