Phase Failure / Sequence / Imbalance Protection

Why phase loss, wrong sequence and voltage imbalance damage motors, how phase-monitoring relays detect them, settings, placement ahead of motors and ATS, and generator-specific considerations.

In short. Phase loss, reversed sequence and imbalance cause motor overheating, reverse rotation and nuisance trips. A phase-monitoring relay detects them and opens a contactor before damage. It belongs ahead of motors and across ATS transfer points.

The three conditions

ConditionEffect
Phase failure (single phasing)Motor draws high current on remaining phases and overheats
Wrong sequenceMotor runs in reverse; pumps and compressors may be damaged
Voltage imbalanceNegative-sequence current heats the rotor

See unbalance studies.

How the relay works

Sense all three phase voltages → check presence, order and balance → open the control circuit if outside limits, after a time delay.

Settings and placement

  1. Set imbalance threshold and trip delay to avoid nuisance trips.
  2. Place at the motor starter or at the incoming of a load group.
  3. Use under and over voltage functions where useful.
  4. Add after ATS transfer to check sequence on the generator side.

Generator and ATS notes

After maintenance, phase sequence on the generator can differ from the utility. Check sequence before connecting to the changeover. A sequence relay prevents reverse-rotation damage. See ATS service and architecture.

Complementary protection

Illustrative example

A borewell pump burns twice in a year. The cause is single phasing from a blown fuse on the supply. A phase failure relay opens the starter within seconds, and the pump survives the next event.

Why single phasing destroys motors

When one supply phase is lost, a running three-phase motor continues on two phases. To deliver the same torque, the remaining phase currents rise, often by a factor of about 1.7 or more, and heating rises sharply. A thermal overload relay may eventually trip, but the delay can be long enough to damage the winding, especially if the motor is lightly loaded or has a wide overload setting. A phase failure relay reacts to the voltage condition itself and acts faster.

Back-feed through the motor

A running motor with one phase lost can regenerate voltage on the open phase, so a simple voltage-presence relay might not see the loss. Use relays that evaluate all three phase relationships, not just one reading. Check the relay type against this issue.

Relay features and settings

FeatureTypical purpose
Phase loss detectionOpens contactor on lost phase
Phase sequenceBlocks wrong rotation
Unbalance threshold and delayAvoids nuisance trips while protecting motors
Under and over voltageProtects against abnormal supply
Restart delayAllows supply to stabilise

Where to install

  1. At each critical motor starter.
  2. At the incoming of pump rooms and plant rooms.
  3. At the output side of ATS to catch sequence errors from generator.
  4. On stabiliser outputs, as an extra layer.

Testing

Test by removing a phase fuse under safe supervised conditions on a test rig, or use the relay’s test function. Document the result and the date. Repeat at scheduled intervals.

Awareness at generator changeover

After generator service, check phase rotation at the output with a rotation meter before connecting loads. This one check prevents reverse-rotation damage to pumps, compressors and lifts.

The master engineering question

If one phase disappears at 3 am, what stops the motor before it overheats?

Questions engineers ask

Is a motor overload relay enough?

It helps, but dedicated phase protection acts faster in some cases.

What imbalance trips motors?

Follow motor maker limits; even a few percent matters.

Does a stabiliser protect against phase loss?

It needs separate protection.

Why check sequence on generators?

Maintenance can swap phases.

Values are illustrative. Follow motor and relay maker data.
