In short. A static bypass is an automatic electronic switch that transfers the load to mains if the UPS inverter fails or overloads. A maintenance bypass is a manual path that isolates the UPS for service. They do different jobs, and bypass hazards need interlocks and procedure.
Two bypasses, two jobs
| Feature | Static bypass | Maintenance bypass |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | Automatic, in milliseconds | Manual, planned |
| Purpose | Protect the load on UPS fault or overload | Isolate the UPS for service |
| Supply during use | Raw mains or generator | Raw mains or generator |
| Risk | Load sees the bypass source quality | Load is unprotected while on bypass |
Transfer conditions
- Inverter output and bypass should be synchronised for a clean transfer.
- Bypass source must be within voltage and frequency limits.
- On a generator, frequency drift can block or disturb transfer.
Hazards
- Backfeed: ensure the UPS cannot energise a dead input through bypass.
- Paralleling out of phase through a wrong operation.
- Maintenance on a live bypass path.
Use mechanical or key interlocks and a written procedure. Never rely on memory alone.
Procedure outline
- Confirm bypass source healthy and synchronised.
- Transfer to static bypass.
- Close maintenance bypass, then isolate the UPS.
- Test and service.
- Reverse the sequence with checks at each step.
Illustrative example
A UPS inverter fails in the night. The static switch transfers the load to the bypass within milliseconds, the alarm notifies the team, and in the morning the technician uses the maintenance bypass to isolate the unit safely.
Why synchronisation matters
If the inverter and bypass source are not in phase when the static switch transfers, a step change in voltage appears at the load, and a large circulating current can flow. UPS controls therefore hold the inverter in sync with the bypass source within its frequency window. If the bypass source frequency leaves the window, as can happen on a generator, the UPS may refuse a clean transfer or may transfer with a break, depending on settings.
Overload and fault handling
When the load exceeds the inverter’s overload capability, the static switch transfers to bypass, where the bypass source can supply a high current to clear a downstream fault. Check that the bypass path and its protection are rated for this duty. Selectivity between the UPS output protection and downstream devices should be reviewed. See protection coordination.
Hazards and controls
| Hazard | Control |
|---|---|
| Backfeed to a dead input | Backfeed protection contactor; warning labels |
| Wrong switching order | Interlocks and written procedure |
| Live parts in the bypass cabinet | Lockout and tag, proper PPE |
| Out-of-phase paralleling | Sync check relay or UPS logic |
Maintenance bypass procedure outline
- Confirm the bypass source is healthy and within limits.
- Transfer to static bypass at the UPS.
- Close the maintenance bypass switch.
- Open UPS input and output isolators, then battery isolator.
- Verify absence of voltage before working.
Return in reverse order, following the maker’s manual.
Training and records
Ensure at least two trained people can perform the procedure. Keep a printed single-line diagram and procedure at the UPS. Record every bypass event with date, reason and duration.
The master engineering question
What does the load see when the UPS is on bypass, and who is responsible for making that safe?
What to send us
Send UPS single-line diagram. Send your application details.
Questions engineers ask
Is bypass power protected?
No, it is raw mains or generator supply.
Can bypass cause outages?
Yes, if unsynchronised or if the source is poor.
Do I need interlocks?
Yes, for safety.
Is bypass needed on small UPS?
Depends on criticality and design.
Values are illustrative. Follow maker and site procedures.
