In short. Protection and breakers need control power at the moment of a fault, which may be during a blackout. A reliable DC system (battery, charger, distribution) and supervised trip circuits make that power available. Many failures to trip are DC failures, not relay failures.
Components
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| Battery bank | Stores energy for trip, close, control and starting-related functions |
| Charger / rectifier | Keeps the battery charged and supplies steady load |
| DC distribution | Fused or MCB-protected circuits to each load |
| Trip circuit supervision | Monitors coil and wiring continuity |
| Earth-fault monitor | Detects first DC earth fault |
Sizing the battery
- List continuous loads (relays, indication, controllers) and their power.
- List momentary loads (breaker closing and tripping, spring charging motors).
- Choose the required autonomy time: how long the system must operate with no charger.
- Apply ageing, temperature and design margins.
- Check the voltage at the end of discharge is above the lowest operating voltage of the equipment.
Cold temperatures reduce capacity, and old batteries lose capacity, so size for the end-of-life condition.
Trip circuit supervision
A trip coil open circuit, broken wire or blown fuse means a relay can send a trip command that never reaches the breaker. Supervision relays or built-in functions monitor continuity with the breaker open and closed, and alarm on failure. This should be present on critical breakers.
Redundancy
- Two independent DC supplies for primary and backup protection on critical systems.
- Separate fusing per function so that one fault does not take everything down.
- Alarm on charger failure, low voltage and earth faults.
Maintenance
- Regular capacity or discharge tests according to the battery type.
- Check electrolyte or terminal condition where applicable.
- Replace batteries at the end of design life, not when they fail.
- Test breaker operation on DC alone.
Illustrative example
A switchgear room fails to trip on a fault during a blackout because the battery has aged and its voltage collapses under the load of the closing motors. A discharge test would have shown the loss of capacity. After replacement, the autonomy is verified at a lower temperature than the design case, and trip circuit supervision is added.
Why DC control power is the foundation of protection
A relay and a trip coil need power when the AC system has failed or faulted. A protection scheme with a flat or failed battery is unprotected without any visible sign. The battery, charger and DC distribution deserve the same design care as the relays.
System components
| Component | Considerations |
|---|---|
| Battery bank (lead-acid or Ni-Cd) | Autonomy, ageing, temperature, ventilation |
| Charger | Float and boost modes, current limiting, alarms |
| DC distribution | Separate circuits for protection, control and closing |
| Supervision | Earth fault detection, low-voltage alarm, charger fail alarm |
| Trip circuit supervision | Monitors coil and wiring continuity |
Sizing logic
- List continuous loads and momentary loads (breaker closing, tripping).
- Define the required autonomy, for example several hours.
- Apply ageing and temperature factors.
- Choose capacity to meet the end-of-life, worst-case duty.
Battery voltage is not capacity: a bank can show correct float voltage and still be unable to deliver a trip current. Load testing finds it.
Maintenance and safety
- Check electrolyte levels, terminal condition, charger settings and room ventilation.
- Perform capacity or discharge tests at planned intervals.
- Follow safe battery handling procedures and applicable standards.
See battery and starting systems and breaker failure protection.
Common mistakes
- Battery sized for new condition only.
- No supervision of trip circuits.
- Single DC supply for primary and backup protection.

Questions engineers ask
How long should the DC autonomy be?
It depends on the site and restoration time. Define it from the operating philosophy.
What is trip circuit supervision?
A function that monitors the trip coil and wiring so failure is alarmed in advance.
Why do batteries fail without warning?
Capacity can drop with age and temperature, and only a load test reveals it.
Can the generator starting battery supply protection?
It is better to keep control and starting supplies separate, unless designed otherwise.
This guide gives general principles. Sizing needs equipment data.
