In short. Black start restores a plant with no live bus. A defined state machine starts one source, energises the bus, builds the plant in stages and hands control back to normal operation. Every step has permissives, timeouts and a manual fall-back.
Why black start is hard
- No bus voltage for relays, control power or motors.
- Several sources may try to close onto a dead bus together.
- Transformer inrush and motor starting hit a small first source.
- Protection settings may not suit the weak initial source.
State machine
| State | Action | Exit condition |
|---|---|---|
| 0 Blackout confirmed | Verify no source and no fault | All buses dead, no lockout |
| 1 Start black-start source | Start designated set from battery or air start | Voltage and frequency stable |
| 2 Energise priority bus | Close source breaker to dead bus (single-source arbitration) | Bus live and stable |
| 3 Pick up base loads | Control, lighting, ventilation, UPS | Stable after each block |
| 4 Start further sources | Synchronise to live bus | Capacity above required |
| 5 Pick up motors and transformers | One at a time | Within limits |
| 6 Return to normal | Restore ties and automation | All modes normal |
Requirements
- A reliable starting energy source: charged batteries, air start, or a dedicated emergency set.
- Control power that survives blackout. See control power.
- Dead-bus closing logic with arbitration. See dead-bus logic.
- Staged restoration. See restoration.
- Protection settings appropriate to a weak source, where required.
Manual fall-back
Operators need a written procedure that works with no PLC or SCADA. Train, and drill. See degraded modes.
Verification
A real black-start drill is the only convincing proof. Record times for each state, issues found and corrections made. See acceptance framework.
Illustrative example
A remote plant simulates a blackout. The black-start set starts from its battery, energises the priority bus in 15 seconds and picks up control, ventilation and UPS. A second set synchronises after 60 seconds and the pumps start one at a time. The drill reveals a locked-out breaker and a transformer inrush trip, both corrected before the next drill.
What black start means
A black start restores a system from complete shutdown with no external supply. On a generator site, it means the plant can restart its first generator and rebuild the load without help from the utility.
Prerequisites
- Starting batteries or air start with enough stored energy.
- Control power that survives the blackout, from DC batteries.
- No dependency on the failed supply for fuel pumps, cooling or lubrication priming, or a backup for them.
- Breakers in a known state, with the bus isolated before restart.
Restoration state machine
| State | Action |
|---|---|
| Blackout confirmed | Open all load breakers and feeders (or leave open), isolate faults |
| First source start | Start designated set; close to dead bus |
| Auxiliary supply | Energise essential auxiliaries first |
| Parallel further sources | Synchronise additional sets |
| Load pickup | Priority steps, with restoration delays |
| Normal operation | Return to normal mode |
Faults that block restart
- A fault still on the bus: re-closing causes another trip, so check insulation or fault indications first.
- Flat starting batteries after repeated attempts.
Drills
Run a controlled black-start test periodically. Procedures that have never been exercised often fail. See load restoration and battery starting systems.
The master engineering question
If every source and every network is dead at once, what exact action restores the first kilowatt, and has that action ever been tested?
What to send us
Send the plant layout and existing restoration plan. Send your application details. See also black start.
Questions engineers ask
Is black start only for large plants?
No. Any site depending on automation needs a plan for total loss.
Why start one source first?
To avoid several sources closing onto a dead bus.
How often to drill?
At least on commissioning and after major changes, then periodically.
What if starting batteries are flat?
Provide a backup start path and battery monitoring.
This guide gives general principles. Test procedures must be approved by the site.
