Critical-Power Earthing and Neutral Architecture

How earthing and neutral arrangements work in systems with generators, transformers and UPS: neutral switching, earth-fault paths, circulating currents and the mistakes that cause trips.

In short. In a system with several sources, the neutral and earth connections decide whether earth faults are detected and cleared, and whether currents circulate where they should not. Decide where the neutral is earthed, whether it is switched during transfer, and how generators and UPS fit, as a single design.

Why this matters for critical power

A utility supply, a generator and a UPS each have their own neutral. When they connect through transfer switches and ties, the neutral can end up bonded in several places or not at all. That can cause nuisance earth-fault trips, hidden fault paths, circulating neutral current or unsafe touch voltages.

Key choices

Comparison

ArrangementAdvantageConcern
Switched neutral, 4-pole ATSEach source keeps its own earth; ground-fault relays work per sourceBrief neutral float during transfer; more complex
Solid common neutral, 3-pole ATSSimple; no neutral floatNeutral currents may split between earths; ground-fault relays can mis-operate
Single earth pointOne fault path; easy to protectNeeds careful design of generator earthing in island

Earth-fault protection interplay

Ground-fault relays and residual current devices rely on the neutral being earthed at one known point. A second neutral-earth bond lets part of the neutral current return through earth, so a relay can see a false residual or miss a real fault. Check each transfer state: utility, generator, tie closed.

UPS and isolation transformers

A UPS with an isolation transformer on its output creates a new neutral that is earthed at its own point. A UPS without one takes the neutral through. Define the earthing at each stage. See isolation transformers.

Earthing system basics

The earth electrode system, bonding and equipotential connections hold touch and step voltages safe, and give the fault current a route home. See earthing, bonding and equipotential architecture.

Worked illustration

A site with a three-pole ATS and a generator neutral earthed locally also has the utility neutral earthed at the main board. In generator mode, the neutral is earthed at two points, so load neutral current splits and flows through the earth system. Earth-fault relays see unexpected residual current and trip the generator breaker for no real fault. Changing to a four-pole ATS and removing the second bond restores correct operation. The error came from an earthing decision, not equipment failure.

Checks at design and test

Earthing choices shape continuity

The way neutrals are earthed in a multi-source system decides how earth faults behave and whether sources interfere with each other.

ArrangementEffect
Single neutral-earth link at the main boardSimple; sources share one reference; use 3-pole transfer switches
Separate source earths with 4-pole switchingEach source earthed at its own point; the neutral is switched with the phases
Isolation transformer downstream of UPSCreates a new local neutral, useful for single-fault containment
High-resistance earthingLimits earth fault current, allows continued operation with a first fault in some industrial designs

Common problems

Design method

  1. Draw the neutral and earth path for each operating state.
  2. Count the neutral-earth bonds in each state; there should be exactly one per electrical system at a time.
  3. Choose the transfer switch type to match.
  4. Verify with measurement during commissioning.

Questions engineers ask

Should the generator neutral be earthed?

It depends on the system. With a switched neutral, each source is earthed in turn. With a solid neutral, earth at one point. Follow the design and applicable standards.

Why do I need a four-pole ATS?

To switch the neutral with the phases so each source keeps its own earth reference without creating parallel neutral paths.

Why do ground-fault relays trip falsely on generator?

A second neutral-earth bond or unbalanced neutral current can create a residual that mimics a fault.

Does a UPS change the earthing?

It can, especially with an isolation transformer. Define it at each stage.

Earthing must comply with applicable electrical codes. Confirm with a qualified engineer.
